Beefy Little Milkers on Show at Expo

Dexter Cattle Promotion Group, Sunshine Coast QLD are proud to showcase their wonderful Dexter breed the 2018 Farm Fantastic Expo. Dexters are a hardy and productive small cattle breed with a long history and a promising future.

They are a quiet and yet hardy cow, producing excellent quality milk and meat. Originally a horned breed, polled animals are now commonplace. The horns, if present, are handsome, curved white with a black tip. The most common colour is black with red and dun being the options.

In just two short decades Dexters have become an established breed in Australia. Their popularity a direct result of the cattle themselves, they are small, versatile, amicable and tough. They are known for the longevity and persistent productivity. Over the years this once scoffed at ‘small breed’ has earned the respect of cattle producers  Dexters now hold their own and in some cases, out-compete the larger more traditional beef breeds.

Dexter cattle are a perfect alternative for land management for all small to medium acre farmers. They have a substantially lighter body weight, distributed on not so small feet, thus creating less impact on the land. They have a hardy constitution, are excellent foragers and so do well in the more marginal country. Their excellent early maturing and growth rate delivers greater productivity per acre per year.

As with all breeds, stocking rates and management practices will reflect on the productivity and health of the animals. No animal is easy on the land nor will they perform well when numbers exceed capacity. However, with the right management and knowledge, the beloved Dexters are a wonderful option for small and not so small acreage farming.
